1Highlights
Huandao Road loops roughly 43 kilometres around Xiamen island, but the part that matters to a visitor is the southern coastal stretch, where a dedicated cycling lane and footpath run between the traffic and the sea past Baicheng Beach, Hulishan, Zengcuo'an and Huangcuo Beach. Across the water is Kinmen (Taiwan, China), and the large slogan board facing the strait is the stop everyone photographs. The whole thing is free โ the road, the path, the beaches, the viewing platforms. The honest pitch is that it needs no ticket, no booking and no tour: unlock a bike at Baicheng and ride east. The only real obstacle for an international visitor is the bike itself, which is worth sorting out before you arrive at the beach rather than standing there with a QR code you cannot use.

2Tickets
Nothing to buy for the road itself. Shared bikes are charged by time at a few yuan an hour, unlocked through Alipay or WeChat โ which is the one thing to arrange in advance, since both require identity verification and a linked payment method before the first unlock. Paid sights along the way are optional and separate: Hulishan Fort is ยฅ25 for adults (students and children around ยฅ12โ15), and the Twin Towers observation deck charges for height. Official live prices govern.
| Cycle lane, footpath, beaches | Free | Baicheng, Huangcuo, the music square, Yefengzhai and the Yanwu Bridge viewing platform all cost nothing. |
|---|---|---|
| Shared bike | A few yuan per hour | Alipay or WeChat unlock, charged by time. Identity verification needed before the first ride. |
| Hulishan Fort | ยฅ25 adult | The world's largest surviving coastal cannon, with scheduled Qing-drill performances. Roughly 08:00โ18:00 in summer, closing earlier in winter. |
| Twin Towers observation deck | Charged | Optional. The shopping-centre sky garden on an upper floor gives a sea view for nothing. |
Sort the bike out before you get to the beach๏ผShared bikes unlock only through Alipay or WeChat, and both want identity verification plus a working payment method before they will release a bike. Do that at the hotel on wi-fi, not standing at Baicheng with a dead data connection. If you cannot get a Chinese payment app working at all, staffed rental stands near the beaches hire bikes for cash or card at roughly ยฅ30 an hour โ more expensive, but it means the ride still happens.
You do not need an 'island tour' for this๏ผIt is a public road with a bike lane. Packaged island tours mostly drive it, which gets you the distance and none of the point โ the reason to be here is being outside at bicycle speed with the sea on your left. Ignore pier-side touts selling low-priced boat trips and day tours around this stretch.
3Getting There
The easiest start is Baicheng Beach just outside Xiamen University's south gate, about fifteen minutes by taxi from Zhongshan Road; you can also join at Zengcuo'an partway along. Ride one way, drop the bike when you have had enough and take a taxi or bus back โ far easier than a return ride into the wind.
Zhongshan Road โ Baicheng Beach, about 15 minutes
Several routes run along the road, so you can bail out anywhere
Pick up and drop anywhere along the route
XMU south side โ Baicheng Beach, a few minutes
One way out, taxi back๏ผBaicheng east to Huangcuo is 8โ10km and takes about two hours at an easy pace with stops. Doing it as a return ride doubles the time and puts the second half into the dark. Ride one way and ride the taxi home.
4Route & Photos
Suggested: Baicheng Beach โ Hulishan โ Zengcuo'an for a drink โ the slogan board โ Huangcuo Beach for sunset, around 8โ10km one way. Setting off after 16:00 gets you to Huangcuo for the light and skips the midday glare, which on this coast is the difference between a good ride and an endurance exercise โ there is almost no shade anywhere along it.
Recommended Route
- 1
Baicheng Beach
Outside XMU's south side, the natural start. Fine sand, clear water, and the place to check your bike actually unlocks.
- 2
Hulishan
Rocky shore and the Qing-era coastal fort (ยฅ25, optional). The boardwalk round the headland is free and worth the detour.
- 3
Zengcuo'an
The converted fishing village, mid-route. Stop for a drink and a snack; it is not a place to sit down for a proper meal.
- 4
The slogan board
The large board facing the water toward Kinmen (Taiwan, China) โ the photo stop that explains where you are.
- 5
Huangcuo Beach
Wide sand, fewer people than Baicheng, and the sunset. This is where to end the ride and call a car.
Best Photo Spots
The seaside boardwalk stretch
Cycle path, sea and the Twin Towers in the distance all in one frame.
Huangcuo Beach at sunset
Silhouettes against the water. Arrive twenty minutes before sunset, not at it.
5Food & Stay
| Zengcuo'anSnacks and drinks | ยฅ20โ50 pp | Busy and tourist-priced. Good for a refuel mid-ride, not for dinner. |
|---|---|---|
| Huangcuo areaSeafood stalls | ยฅ80โ150 pp | Agree the species and the per-jin price before anything is weighed. |
Price seafood before it is weighed๏ผFor anything sold by the jin, settle the species and the price per jin first, and ask separately what the cooking fee is. This is the standard way disputes start along any Chinese seafood coast, and it is entirely avoidable with one question asked early.
Where to Stay
- Zengcuo'an or Huangcuo, ยฅ200โ600/night โ guesthouses and sea-view inns right on the route, so you can ride at dawn as well as dusk. Zengcuo'an is noisy at night; Huangcuo is quieter.
6Tips & Pitfalls
- Set the payment app up before you leave the hotel. Shared bikes unlock only via Alipay or WeChat, both of which need identity verification first. A staffed rental stand at around ยฅ30/hour is the fallback.
- Go after 16:00. No shade anywhere on the seafront, and the summer midday sun here is punishing. Late afternoon also puts you at Huangcuo for sunset.
- Ride one way and taxi back. 8โ10km out is a pleasant two hours; the same distance back into the evening wind is not.
- Slow down where the lanes converge. The cycle lane runs alongside the footpath and pedestrians drift across it, especially at weekends near Zengcuo'an and the beaches.
- Stay off the seafront in a typhoon. Roughly July to September; heed the warnings rather than going to look at the waves.
7Frequently Asked Questions
Does Huandao Road charge admission?
No. The road, the cycle lane, the footpath, the beaches and the viewing platforms are all free. The only costs are the shared bike's time charge and any optional sight you choose to enter, such as Hulishan Fort at ยฅ25.
Where should I start, and how far is it?
Baicheng Beach outside Xiamen University's south side, riding east past Zengcuo'an to Huangcuo Beach โ about 8โ10km one way, roughly two hours at an easy pace with stops. The whole ring road is about 43km, but the southern coastal stretch is the part worth riding.
Can foreign visitors use the shared bikes?
Yes, but not instantly. They unlock only through Alipay or WeChat, and both require identity verification and a linked payment method before your first ride โ set that up on hotel wi-fi beforehand. If it will not work, staffed rental stands near the beaches hire bikes at roughly ยฅ30 an hour without a Chinese app.
When is the best time to ride?
Early morning or late afternoon. Leave after 16:00 to reach Huangcuo for sunset and avoid the midday sun, which is unrelieved โ there is effectively no shade along the seafront.
Can I see Kinmen from here?
On a clear day you can look across the strait toward Kinmen (Taiwan, China), and there is a large slogan board along the route facing the water. Binoculars at Hulishan give a closer look at the islands offshore.
